The first Serbian Aarhus Center in Kragujevac supported by the Ministry of environment and spatial planning, the OSCE Mission to Serbia and the City of Kragujevac, will soon start to operate.
The Memorandum of understanding was signed by the Minister of environment and spatial planning Oliver Dulic and the Mayor of Kragujevac Veroljub Stevanovic at the Conference on implementation of the Aarhus Convention. The Memorandum envisages establishment of the regional center.
The Aarhus Convention was ratified in Serbia the environmental laws called «green package» adopted by the Serbian Government. The Convention implies the right of the citizens to be informed on environmental issues, but also the right to participate in decision making, as well as the right of legal protection involving the issues.
“It is good that the City of Kragujevac got first center such as this, and, of course, I am glad that something so significant is happening outside Belgrade. I find that the center will be of great help to everyone who live in the environment where there is a building site of some factory, or some spot of realization of some infrastructural project, and it would be possible for them to have access to some document when they want to,” the Minister pointed out.
Among the planned activities of Kragujevac Aarhus Center are: organization of public discussions, round tables and tribunes on environmental topics with the participation of representatives of the institutions, polluters and interested citizens, along with publication of monthly bulletin on condition of environment in Kragujevac.
