Solemn session of the City Assembly on the occasion of the Djurdjevdan – The City Day was held in the Old Assembly Building in the presence of their excellencies the ambassadors of Palestine, Rumania and Belarus, the representatives of the Embassy of Russian Federation, delegations of sister and friendly cities, national members of the Parliament, University representatives, religious groups, representatives of the judiciary system , state bodies and institutions and press.
The President of the City Assembly Mr. Milan Urosevic greeted the guests and invitees, upon the National Anthem intonation by the Singing Company of Kragujevac, and noted that the festivities are organized to celebrate the historical decision of the Prince Milos who 198 years ago on Djurdjevdan 1818 at the Session of the National Leaders at the Monastery of Vracevsnica decided to proclaim Kragujevac the first capital of new liberated Serbian State.
The Mayor of Kragujevac, Mr. Radomir Nikolic in his address at the Session before all mentioned that one year passed from the last Djurdjevdan and that he had not been aware of the meaning of being the head of the City. “I am not ashamed to admit as I was not ashamed to call many of you for assistance advice, favour. Today, because you assisted Kragujevac by assisting me I consider you the friends”, said the Mayor of Kragujevac. Nikolic added that the worst in the financial consolidation is over, some projects are continued, and some are being initiated underlying the employment as a goal.
“Everything less than that would be a failure regardless to what are whose authorities and political backgrounds. The employment used to be assumed here, today we strive for it” said the Mayor Nikolic, adding that he shared his opinion with the Prime Minister who in Kragujevac said: We must put Kragujevac back on the map of significant European industrial centers. The Government will assist and you give your best”. Nikolic stressed that one of the achievements of the Old Continent was the lack of borders between us that people and their capital move freely, adding the fact that a number of the present representatives of the friendly cities succeeded to save their cities from the claws of poverty and unemployment. “That represents a great success of your central and local governments. That is why when we ask for your assistance or advice, as we have done so far, do not mind it, we are only in a hurry to keep up with you”, said the Mayor of Kragujevac expressing the hope that it would be soon.
Annual acknowledgments and awards were presented traditionally at the Solemn session of the assembly. By the decision of the City Assembly the Honorary Citizen title was given to the member of a family of the musician Boris Arandjelovic posthumous. The Saint George awards of the City of Kragujevac for the achievements in 2015 in the field of art was given to Vladimir Jaglicic, in journalism to Jelena Vukovic, in education to Janko Sustercic, in sport to Jelena Milovanovic and in the field of humanitarian activities to the Association for the Assistance of the Autistic. By the decision of the Mayor the St George plaque was given to Luka Milivojevic for the outstanding contribution and assistance providing to the City and the citizens as well as for the promotion of the City both in the country and abroad; City of Sombor and Utility Company “Cistoca” from Sombor for the provided assistance to the City and affirmation of the human and humanitarian values. On behalf of the awarded Snezana Markovic Josovic from the Association for the Assistance of the Autistic stressed that the St George Award is both significant and obligatory for all to keep up the good work so that Kragujevac in the future would be even better in every sense.
