The Mayors of Kragujevac and Jericho, Veroljub Stevanovic and Hassan Saleh, signed the Letter of Intent to make cooperation between the two cities official. The talks have been conducted in the past few months. The Ambassador of the State of Palestine HE Mr Mohammad Nabhan and the Consul Talal Elzik had paid a visit on several occasions to Kragujevac on this matter. Also, they were present upon the signing of the Letter of Intent.
The Mayor Stevanovic noted that it is no accident that Kragujevac is establishing cooperation and sistership with Jericho for it is the oldest city in the world, reach of culture, history and tradition. “What is particular about people of Palestine is their relationship with Serbia and the Serbs. At the time of the strongest negative media campaign, it was them who supported the people of Serbia. They know our people very well, many of them studied in Serbia, some of them chose to live here, and, moreover, they give us primacy when it comes to economic cooperation. The Palestinians are very influential in the Arab world because of everything that they have been passing through in their country, so in that sense we see there an opportunity for economic collaboration”, he said. The Mayor explained that signing the Letter of Intent is only the first, but very important step in setting up tighter connections between Kragujevac and Jericho, adding that the Protocol on Cooperation is going to be signed within next few months.
“This cooperation is outcome of the agreement between Kragujevac officials and our Ambassador”, stated the Mayor of Jeriho Hassan Saleh hoping that exchange of high-school and university students, mutual visits, as well as build up of cultural connections will soon follow. “We have close collaboration with many sister cities that are open to cooperation with your city”, said Saleh.
The Ambassador Nabhan find that this day was historical one, for it represented climax of efforts that both sides made previously. “The Letter of Intent represents the continuity of our friendship, but also the basis for cooperation intensification”, said the Ambassador.
