The Cooperation between Kragujevac and Chinese Xi'an Officially Confirmed

The Mayor of Kragujevac, Mr Radomir Nikolić and the Member of the Standing Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wei Minzhou have signed an Agreement on establishing friendly relations between the City of Kragujevac and City of Xi'an  from the People’s Republic of China.

The cooperation between the two cities, as predicted by the agreement, will be established in the fields of economy and trading, science and technology, culture, education, sports, health services and in many other fields where mutual interests are recognized.

The agreement was signed on the initiative of the two embassies, Chinese in Serbia and Serbian in China, followed by the initiative from the respective presidents of the Republic of Serbia and People’s Republic of China during their last year meeting in September. Xi’an is the capital of Shaanxi Province and a city very similar to Kragujevac. It is the old capital of China, where the industrialization of the country was initiated. Another interesting trivia is that Chinese president comes from this city. This was the initial idea of the two presidents, to establish friendly relations between their home towns. We have already paid a visit to Xi’an and their delegation has visited Kragujevac, too. Therefore, certain cultural cooperation has already been started. Today we are to agree on the cooperation between universities and then we will meet the businessmen from Xi’an. I believe that Kragujevac will benefit immensely from the contacts established with China and Chinese companies, which will, among other things, be one of the factors to lead Kragujevac out of the crisis- said Mr Radomir Nikolić, Mayor of Kragujevac after signing the agreement.

Xi’an is located in the central part of China and it is one of the oldest cities. It covers the territory of 9.983 square kilometers and it has eight million residents. Xi’an is the place where industrialization of China was started and it is famous for its automotive and arms industry. It has 18 universities and it is widely known for its archaeological excavations from 1974 when more than 8000 life-size soldiers made of terracotta were found.

The City of Kragujevac has already started the realization of first Chinese investments. An agreement was signed with a Chinese company, CMEC, on the cooperation which includes the construction of a large-scale slaughterhouse and meat processing plants used to produce the meat products which will be exported to China directly. The project envisages purchase of cattle bred in the range of 70 km around Kragujevac.

It is necessary to increase the livestock and the company will soon start buying the cattle from farmers in Šumadija, and to sign long-term contracts with them. A significant advantage of this project is that the market is guaranteed (in China) and that the price and purchase will be guaranteed to the producers in the upcoming period. Furthermore, we have signed contracts with Huawei and another big Chinese company that is currently working on a feasibility study on the investment in Kragujevac. Should these agreements be realized, a great number of workplaces will be created – said Mr Nikolić.
During the visit of Chinese President Xi Jiping, the delegations of Serbia and China signed a total of 22 agreements on cooperation in the field of construction, infrastructure, telecommunication, trading, defence and media, among which is the Mutual statement of Serbia and China on establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
